Claude Tag: Anthropic Turns @Claude Into a Persistent Slack Teammate
Claude Tag is not just a chatbot that lives in Slack. Announced by Anthropic on June 23, 2026, it embeds Claude directly inside Slack channels as a persistent, shared teammate that anyone on a team can delegate work to by typing @Claude. The shift matters because Claude is no longer a tool you open in a separate tab and prompt from scratch each time. It sits where the team already works, keeps context across people and days, and can act on its own when allowed.
Official Positioning
Anthropic frames Claude Tag as “a new way for teams to work with Claude,” and explicitly as an evolution of Claude Code that makes the model “even more proactive, and it works better with a full team.” Where Claude Code optimized a single developer’s loop, Claude Tag optimizes the team’s loop: shared context, public work, and parallel delegation.
The mechanic is deliberately simple. You tag @Claude with a request in plain language, and the model “will break its task down into stages and then work through them in turn, using the tools it has access to.” There is no special syntax to learn — the interface is the conversation a team is already having.
Claude Tag is available today in beta for Claude Enterprise and Team customers, and it works with Opus 4.8. The product page is at claude.com/product/tag. Anthropic is also clear that Slack is only the starting surface: the longer-term goal is for teams to tag @Claude in more of the places they already work.
Multiplayer Context Is the Core Idea
The most important design choice in Claude Tag is that it is shared, not per-user. Within a given Slack channel, there is one Claude that interacts with everyone. Anyone can see what it is working on, and anyone can pick up the conversation from where the last person left off. When a task finishes, Claude replies in the Slack thread with what it created, instead of locking the output inside one person’s private window.
This is a meaningful departure from the typical AI assistant, where each person has a private thread and context dies when the tab closes. By making Claude a single, visible participant in the channel, work happens in public view with far greater context. Handoffs between teammates stop requiring a re-brief, because the AI already followed the whole thread.
Anthropic also keeps a private path: you can DM Claude, and it will reply privately using the personal tools and connectors you have set up. Shared channels are for team-visible collaboration; DMs are for personal private tasks. Those two modes should not be mixed carelessly.
Learning Over Time
Claude Tag maintains persistent context and memory. As Claude follows along with its channel, it builds more context about the work, so people do not have to explain everything from scratch over and over. With the right permissions, it can also learn automatically from other Slack channels and connected data sources.
One official boundary matters a lot here: it does not report from private channels. Cross-channel learning only happens inside scopes that have been explicitly granted. That is the hard part of turning a tool into a teammate. A generic model answers each prompt in isolation; a model that accumulates organizational context starts to understand a company’s products, metrics, history, and shorthand — and therefore needs tighter range control.
Ambient Mode and Autonomous Work
Two features push Claude Tag past request-and-response.
Ambient mode lets Claude monitor assigned channels and act without a direct mention. When enabled, it can proactively flag relevant information, follow up on forgotten threads, post status updates, and gather facts from other channels and connected tools it can access. Instead of waiting to be asked, it behaves more like a colleague who notices things.
Autonomous / asynchronous work lets Claude take on a task and keep going while the team focuses elsewhere. It can schedule tasks for itself and pursue a project over hours or days. Anthropic especially emphasizes parallel delegation: teams can hand work to many Claudes at once, so the model scales horizontally across workload rather than remaining a single serial assistant.
The realistic framing here is not “set it and forget it.” Ambient and autonomous behavior are powerful precisely because they remove the prompt-by-prompt bottleneck — which is also why the admin controls below matter so much.
Admin Controls and Governance
Because Claude Tag is shared, persistent, and capable of acting on its own, governance is built into the product. Administrators can:
- Specify exactly which tools and data Claude can access in specific channels, keeping scope boundaries intact — for example, preventing a “sales” identity from carrying memory or data into engineering channels.
- Set token spend limits, both organization-wide and per-channel.
- View activity logs showing everything
@Claudehas done, along with who requested each task. - Create separate Claude identities for different uses, each with isolated memory.
This is the part that makes Claude Tag credible for enterprises rather than just convenient for individuals. Separate identities with isolated memory, per-channel data scoping, and full audit logs are the difference between a fun bot and a system a security team will approve. Anthropic also published an agent identity and access model, treating “who can access what, under which identity” as a first-class product concern rather than a later patch.
Getting Started (Official Baseline)
Anthropic’s official getting-started path is short enough to use as an admin checklist:
- Pair Claude Tag with your Slack workspace.
- Give Claude access to the tools and data it needs — only what the current use case actually requires.
- Set a monthly organization spend limit.
- Test Claude in a private channel before expanding into shared collaboration channels.
A safer internal rollout order is usually: ambient off first → narrow channels first → low-privilege tools first → human checkpoints first → long-running async tasks later. Do not connect legal, HR, production-secret channels and full tool access on day one.
Teams already using Claude in Slack also need a separate migration plan (next section).
Migration From Claude in Slack
Claude Tag replaces the existing Claude in Slack app. Administrators have a 30-day window to opt in and migrate. Anthropic is also issuing an introductory launch credit to eligible Enterprise and Team organizations so the whole company can try it.
If your team already depends on the older integration, this is not just a feature evaluation. It is a planned transition: which channels Claude should join, what data it may reach, which identities must stay isolated, and what spend limits to set before ambient behavior is turned on. Put a retirement date for the old bot into a change window instead of waiting for the 30-day deadline to force the switch.
Internal Adoption
Anthropic’s strongest evidence is its own usage. The company says 65% of its product team’s code is created by their internal version of Claude Tag. The pattern has spread beyond engineering: tagging Claude is used to chase down product metrics and data, work through support tickets, and help find the root cause of tricky bugs.
That number is a marketing claim and should be read as one, but it is also a useful signal about intended scope. Anthropic is not positioning Claude Tag as a Q&A bot. It is positioning it as a participant in real delivery work across multiple functions.
How It Fits the Competitive Landscape
Claude Tag enters a crowded race to own “organizational context.” Reporting around the launch places it against Microsoft (Copilot and Work IQ over Microsoft Graph), Snowflake and Databricks (positioning their platforms as the knowledge backend for agents), and Glean (an intelligence layer between models and enterprise data).
Anthropic’s angle is to capture that context where work actually happens — inside the team’s chat — rather than as a separate destination users must visit. The bet is that the most useful institutional knowledge is ambient and conversational, and that an AI living in the channel can absorb it more naturally than one querying a data warehouse.

Who It Is For
Claude Tag is most useful for three groups:
- Engineering teams that want to delegate coding, debugging, and investigation work in parallel without leaving Slack.
- Cross-functional teams — support, data, product, ops — that want a shared assistant carrying context across people and threads.
- Enterprises that need AI help but require scoping, spend control, and auditability before they can deploy it.
It is less suited to solo users who just want a private chat assistant; that is what the standard Claude apps already cover. Personal private work belongs in DMs or Claude clients, not in public channels full of sensitive context. Claude Tag’s value comes from being shared and persistent, which only pays off with a team around it.
Limits and Practical Notes
Based on the official materials, teams should keep several constraints in mind:
- Claude Tag is in beta, and the feature set is likely to change; Slack is the primary surface today, with broader surfaces still expanding.
- It is limited to Claude Enterprise and Team customers for now, running on Opus 4.8 — cost and quota planning matter.
- Ambient and autonomous behavior should be enabled deliberately — start with narrow channel scopes, conservative token limits, and audit logs turned on.
- Persistent memory and cross-channel learning are powerful but raise real data-access questions; “does not report from private channels” is not the same as “you can open every public channel without thinking.”
- Shared channel context and personal DMs are two different paths: public collaboration in channels, personal credentials and private tasks in DMs / personal tools.
- Human review still matters. Autonomous work over hours or days needs checkpoints, not blind trust.
- Migration has a 30-day window; teams already depending on Claude in Slack should treat the cutover as a change project, not a casual toggle.
My Take
Claude Tag matters less as a Slack feature and more as a statement about where Anthropic thinks AI work belongs: not in a private chat window, but in the shared, persistent, observable space where teams already coordinate. Claude Code optimized the individual developer. Claude Tag tries to optimize the group.
The genuinely new ideas here are shared context and ambient behavior — one Claude per channel that everyone can see, that keeps learning, and that can act before it is asked. Those are also the ideas that demand the most discipline. The long-term test is not whether @Claude can complete a task once. It is whether a team can trust a persistent, autonomous participant with real access to its work — and whether the governance Anthropic built is strong enough to earn that trust.
